Part of the beauty of volunteering for a festival in Brighton is being allowed into – behind the scenes of – some of Brighton’s best buildings. The Theatre Royal, built in 1808, is one of the oldest theatres in the country; two events I assisted with were held here. This is what it looks like from the stage:

Last week we had local elections; UKIP, a political party further right than the conservatives, grew with support; I felt sick.To quote a Tweeter; “if UKIP is your solution, you clearly don’t understand the problem.” I discovered Selina while I was preparing for my volunteer work with Brighton Festival; the following poem was written back in 2011, but feels as significant now.
