Poetry: Britain on Trial by Selina Nwulu

Last week we had local elections; UKIP, a political party further right than the conservatives, grew with support; I felt sick.To quote a Tweeter; “if UKIP is your solution, you clearly don’t understand the problem.” I discovered Selina while I was preparing for my volunteer work with Brighton Festival; the following poem was written back in 2011, but feels as significant now.

When I sent in my application to volunteer at Brighton Festival last month I had no idea I would be so lucky; usually volunteering means making tea or handing out flyers, however, I got drafted to assist with this year’s literary and spoken word events! Words are not expressive enough of how I feel.
