Poetry: I Am Not Yours by Sara Teasdale

I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.

Oh plunge me deep in love — put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.

  1. Nice šŸ™‚ It’s occurred to me that I’ve not asked (and admit I may have forgotten if you’ve mentioned it before) – where are you finding the poems you’re posting? Are you reading a particular book or found an inspiring site? It’s a good variety.

    1. To be perfectly honest, I tend to google ‘famous poems’ and go from there. I would love to say I have a deep knowledge, but I tend to pick ones that sound pleasant to me (which is why thus far Emily Dickinson has not featured, because although she is a female poet [and I want to promote female poetry] I am not a fan of her poems).

I do have some poetry books that I have picked out poems from as well – a book of the nation’s favourite poems and a book of E. E. Cummings poetry.
