I Could Never Do That

We all have moments in our lives when we say to ourselves, ‘I could never do that‘. Whether you are wondering how to fix your laptop, considering learning a new language, or deciding you are too old to learn new skills. It is so easy to feel defeated by our convenience based society, where if you don’t want to (or can afford not to) tackling frustrating challenges isn’t always necessary. For my friend Tania and I, this is a way of thinking we are attempting to challenge.

It started back in October when Tania came to me with her idea; we create a site where we challenge ourselves to do all the things we automatically assumed we could never do. Then, with all the resources we gather, other people can take up their own challenges. It is just a blog at the moment, but we want to develop it into a community.

Currently we are jointly tackling NaNoWriMo, Tania more successfully, before diverging. I was considering attempting German for December but, while rummaging for some speakers today I discovered my graveyard of broken laptops; I cannot afford to get them fixed, nor would it be worth the money to do so – can I fix them? It’s finally time to see!

I am also thinking of starting up a book club there, reading one book a month, so if any of you are interested in joining let me know!

Have you had any ‘I Could Never Do That’ moments?

  1. Great idea, Alice! For a long time, ‘I could never do that’ was exactly what I thought about being a writer. I just assumed it wasn’t for people like me, and gave up before I’d started. I ended up working as a corporate banker and being miserable. Took me years to turn my life around and do what I’d wanted to do in the first place. NaNoWriMo was an important part of it for me, by the way, so it’s good to hear you’re doing that. Good luck with the last few days!

    1. Thanks, Andrew! Glad to know the I could never do that mentality didn’t get you down and stop you writing. I completely failed NaNoWriMo, but, I learnt a lot doing it.

  2. What a cool idea! I’ll have to brainstorm some things that I thought I could never do, and then see if I can, in fact, do them. I have frequently thought “I could never learn Cajun dancing,” but actually, I could, right? I bet I could. Maybe that will be something for me to try in the New Year.

    1. Let us know what you think of when you’re done brainstorming, we take submission ideas and add them to the site. Feel free to join any challenges that take your fancy too 🙂
